Abracon, LLC introduces robust RFID tags designed for metal surfaces

(Austin, TX) Abracon, LLC (Abracon), a leading global manufacturer of passive & electromechanical timing, synchronization, power, connectivity and RF components introduces a broad family of fully integrated passive RFID tags operating in the UHF band optimized for use on metal surfaces. These devices offer FCC compliance over 902MHz to 928MHz with multiple form factors that cover read ranges up to 9 meters. The tags are optimized to be directly attached to metal surfaces without limiting the available read range. Unlike fragile inlay tags used on consumer applications, these devices are robust and durable designed for long term use in harsh demanding environments, and are not de-tuned by the metal surface. This extends asset tracking and asset management capabilities into a new class of applications previously unattainable with lower performing tags.

The devices integrate and Alien H3 IC and high performance antenna that enables support for ISO 18000-6C/EPC Class1 Gen2. The family offers multiple form factors with small space saving 5x5mm footprint up to 9meter long read range 25x25mm footprints. Two operating temperature ranges of -30C to 85C and -40C to 85C are available for wide temperature industrial applications.

“Developing RFID tags that respond well when directly attached to large hunks of metal is necessary given that antenna performance is influenced by the environment in which they are sited.” says Dean Clark, Senior Technical Manager with Abracon. “Thin In-lay RFID tags are affected by the metal areas that de-tune them, these ceramic tags were designed for use directly on metal, large metallic objects like shipping containers, vehicle chassis and heavy machinery can be easily tracked.”
