Abracon announces ASMPH family of compact multi-layer chip inductors for power applications

AUSTIN, TX. (19 January 2017) Abracon, LLC. (Abracon), a leading global manufacturer of passive & electromechanical timing, synchronization, power, connectivity and RF components announces the ASMPH family of miniature multilayer power inductors for use in small form factor or battery powered solutions. The compact size, high self-resonant frequency (SRF)  and high efficiency, makes these inductors ideal for DC/DC conversion in space limited designs, including IoT and wearables. Standard operating temperature of -40°C to 85°C and robust construction is ideally suited for industrial applications. Constructed using low loss ferrite material, these inductors support high-speed switching frequencies used in power supply controllers in advance-miniaturized applications.

This family of power inductors offers multiple footprints and inductance tradeoffs. The space saving ASMPH-0603 footprint is 1.6×0.8×0.8mm with current ratings from 1250mA to 300mA and inductance values from  0.22µH to 2.2µH. With inductance values up to 4.7µH, the ASMPH-0805, ASMPH-0806 and ASMPH-1008 offer current carrying capabilities up to 1500mA, enabling a wide range of DC/DC power supply applications.

Abracon Pierce Analyzer System (PAS) validates quartz crystals in-circuit

(Austin, TX) Abracon, LLC (Abracon), a leading global manufacturer of passive & electromechanical timing, synchronization, power, connectivity and RF components announces the availability of an advanced proprietary Pierce analyzer system that validates quartz crystal performance in-circuit. The ability to sustain oscillation for a given quartz crystal oscillator design depends heavily on crystal’s motional parameters, board parasitics and oscillator circuit characteristics. The oscillator circuit is a closed loop system that sustains oscillation at an operating frequency, depending on the crystal plating capacitance (CL), crystal equivalent series resistance (ESR) and Oscillator Amplifier’s gain & phase response. Lower CL and lower ESR at the crystal level, enables the circuit to operate with adequate gain margin and improves the closed-loop stability; ensuring sustained oscillations across all variables, including variation in bias, loading, temperature and over time. Integrated circuits that use external quartz crystals do not always account for these key limiting factors. For instance, estimating or simulating the effect of board parasitics is not always possible. In-circuit testing of the quartz crystal while connected to the oscillator IC and attached to the board reveals design errors and inaccuracies that may cause over-drive, under-drive or center frequency deviations; or even the ability to sustain oscillations.

“Overdrive on the crystal causes long term reliability concerns due to microfractures within the crystal lattice. Under-drive may lead to complete oscillator loop failure, and center frequency errors as high as +/-500 parts per million may be completely out of range of acceptable frequency drift for a given application,” says Syed Raza, VP of Engineering with Abracon. “To conserve power, next generation IC’s must lower the gain in the oscillator loop requiring quartz crystals with much lower ESR at lower plating load. With next generation ultra-low power circuits used in the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearables, fabricated in <14 nanometer geometry; it’s no longer safe to assume that the oscillator will operate with sufficient gain margin, especially over temperature and time.

“The quartz crystal oscillator,” says Juan Conchas, Director of Marketing with Abracon, “sets the beat of the entire system. As oscillators are starved of power, failure to operate or operation off-center frequency is much more likely and more challenging to correct. For this reason, the ability to verify the performance of the crystal oscillator loop in-circuit, has become a necessary step in validating the overall system design.”

These devices offer FCC compliance over 902MHz to 928MHz with multiple form factors that cover read ranges up to 9 meters. The tags are optimized to be directly attached to metal surfaces without limiting the available read range. Unlike fragile inlay tags used on consumer applications, these devices are robust and durable designed for long term use in harsh demanding environments, and are not de-tuned by the metal surface. (Abracon), a leading global manufacturer of passive & electromechanical timing, synchronization, power, connectivity and RF components has released the ASG-ULJ family of oscillators featuring guaranteed ultra-low phase jitter of 100fs RMS and guaranteed maximum phase jitter of 150fs RMS for 156.25MHz output. Specifying maximum phase jitter removes uncertainty from end system hardware design, reduces clock tree troubleshooting time and speeds time to market in high data rate applications such as 10/40/100/400Gb Ethernet, 5G wireless infrastructure and 25Gbps to 56Gbps chip-to-chip or board-to-board interfaces used by FPGAs and advanced processors.

High performance oscillators targeting clocking applications that drive high bandwidth requirements are ideal for servers, PCI Express accelerator add-on cards, wireless backhaul, base stations, switches, routers, automated test equipment and MRI equipment. The explosive need for higher bandwidth requirements are typical within data centers, telecommunications infrastructure, test equipment and high end medical imaging.

Featuring operation from 3.3V or 2.5V with supply current consumption below 40mA for LVCMOS, these high performance XOs consume no more power than standard performing devices. Operation from -40C to +85C with +/-50PPM total stability including aging is standard.

Oscillators for high performance applications such as communications, test and measurement, high performance computing (HPC) and RF systems typically specify single-sided phase noise but may not specify jitter or may not specify over the appropriate integration band. Additionally, some suppliers such as FPGA manufacturers provide phase noise requirements in the form of masks instead of an integrated output jitter requirement. To use the calculator, enter the carrier frequency, integration start and stop offsets, phase offset and phase noise in dB/Hz for a given number of points.
